Originating City (Origin)

Definition:

Observations:

1. For better search results in your database, avoid using a large variety of terms; draw up an authority list and add names of cities as necessary. See documentation tip No. 2 (in French only) for bibliographic references.
2. This field is used in conjunction with the Originating Continent, Originating Country and Originating Province fields.
   Example

   A jug from Montpelier, in the state of Vermont, United States

   	Object Name	jug
   	Originating Continent	North America
   	Originating Country	United States
   	Originating Province	Vermont
   	Originating City	Montpelier

Entry rules:

1. Enter the full name of the city, town, village or municipality; do not use abbreviations.
   Example

   An bottle from Los Angeles, in the United States

   	Object Name	bottle
   	Originating Continent	North America
   	Originating Country	United States
   	Originating Province	California
   	Originating City	Los Angeles
   	and not
   	Originating City	L. A.

2. If the name of the originating city has changed, first enter its current name, followed by a comma and a space, then the former name of the city.
   Example

   A projectile point dating from 1645, found on the Pointe-à-Callière site in Montreal

   	Site Name	Pointe-à-Callière
   	Object Name	projectile point
   	End Date	1645
   	Originating Country	Canada, New France
   	Originating Province	Quebec
   	Originating City	Montreal, Ville-Marie

3. If you are unsure whether your information is correct, include a space and a question mark after the name of the city.
   Example

   A piece of lace from Calvados, probably from the city of Bayeux

   	Object Name	piece of lace
   	Originating Country	France
   	Originating Province	Calvados
   	Originating City	Bayeux ?

4. This field may not contain more than one entry.
