Originating Ocean or Ocean Basin (Site/Habitat/Origin)

Definition:

  • This field contains the name of the ocean, ocean basin or sea where the specimen originated, or of the ocean to which the water body of the capture site drains.

Observation:

  • For better search results in your database, avoid a large variety of terms; draw up an authority list and add keywords as necessary.

Entry rules:

  1. Enter the name of the ocean basin; do not use abbreviations.
    Example

      Discipline ichtyology
     Genus Alosa
      Species pseudoharengus
     Originating Country Canada
      Originating ProvinceNew Brunswick
    Originating Ocean or Ocean Basin Gulf of St. Lawrence
  2. If the name of the originating ocean basin has changed, first enter its current name, followed by a comma and a space, then the name that applied when the specimen was collected.
    Example

      Discipline ichtyology
     GenusMonishia
      Speciesbulejiensis
    Originating Ocean or Ocean Basin Arabian Sea, Oman Sea
  3. This field may contain several entries, since a specimen may have been collected at the boundary of two water bodies. If so, enter the names of the basins in decreasing order of importance, separating the entries with a semicolon followed by a space.
    Example

      Disciplinemammalogy
     Genus Orcinus
      Species orca
    Originating Ocean or Ocean Basin Gulf of St. Lawrence; Saguenay River
  4. If you are unsure whether your information is correct, include a space and a question mark after the word.
    Example

    Originating Ocean or Ocean BasinPacific Ocean ?
