Depth (Dimensions)

Field used for ethnology and history collectionsField used for fine and decorative arts collectionsField used for science and technology collectionsField used for archaeology collections (object data and site data)Société des musées québécois Info-Muse database field

Definition:

  • This field contains the measurement of the maximum depth of the object.

Observations:

  1. Depth is one of the horizontal dimensions of an object.
  2. For objects with a main side, the depth is the maximum dimension measured from front to back, along a real or imaginary horizontal line. The width then refers to the other horizontal dimension, measured from left to right.
  3. For objects with no main side, use the length and not the depth to designate the larger horizontal dimension.
  4. You may also use this field to record the inside depth, for instance of a container. Enter a note to that effect in the Dimension/Weight Remarks field.
  5. You should generally be facing the main side of the object to measure its dimensions. Refer to the "How to measure objects" section of the Guide.
  6. This field is used in conjunction with the Unit Linear field.
  7. Dimensions should always be expressed in centimetres, except when the object is too large or too small.

Entry rules:

  1. Enter a single measurement, in real numbers.
    Example

     Unit Linearcm
    Depth9.25
  2. Details regarding measurements and comments about partial or questionable measurements should be noted in the Dimension/Weight Remarks field.
    Example

     Unit Linearcm
    Depth4.75
Dimension/Weight Remarks The depth indicated is the inside depth.
  3. This field may not contain more than one entry.
