Description Woman wearing an amautik (Inuit woman's parka) and holding a qulliq (oil lamp).
Narrative A qulliq is a traditional oil lamp carved from soapstone, which is also used for carvings. Lamps like these have always played an important role in Inuit life. They burn oil from seals or other marine mammals and are used to light and heat igloos in winter and tents in summer, cook food and heat water. The lamp shown here is especially large. According to professor Bernard Saladin d'Anglure, the Kangiqsujuaq region, where Masiu is from, is known for its very large stone lamps and vessels.
